The town of Corte Madera, California, incorporated in 1916, is located in Marin County and is just 3.25 miles south of San Francisco. Surrounded by the lush woods typical of the county and under the shade of Mt. Tamalpais, the city's 9,253 residents (2010 Census) enjoy mild temperatures tempered by the adjacent Pacific Ocean and proximity to some of the most spectacular views along the West Coast. Originally renowned for its lumber and the logging industry it supported (some of the redwoods from the town were used to build the Presidio), the small outpost has steadily grown.
The town's growth was spurred on by its lumber industry, which brought the North Pacific Coast Railroad, which was instrumental to transporting lumber and commuters to and from San Francisco. One of the town's first business structures was a tavern and hotel built by a Swiss architect named Jerry Adams, this building (which still exists), along with other markers of the post-Gold Rush boom, the Mahood Building (circa 1905), the Holy Innocents Church (1901), the Presbyterian Church, and the numerous homes that nod to New England architectural trends of the late 1880s, many of which can still be seen in the Old Square's surrounding neighborhoods, are sentinels of the town's heritage and well-preserved for posterity.
Weekly pickup of garbage, recycling and compost cans is available to residents. Service areas are split into Hill or Flat areas and special rules apply for Homesteaders. Residents must provide their own collection receptacles and cans should weigh no more than 60 pounds. Certain objects cannot be collected by the city, such as cement, auto parts, rocks, household hazardous wastes, dirt, ashes, E-wastes (televisions, computers, etc.), tires, mattresses, appliances, furniture, or construction material.
