El Cerrito, or "little hill" in Spanish, was a cow town in its infancy. Back in the early years, before it was incorporated in 1917, there were more cows in the town than people. In fact, dairies and chicken farms, dotted its hillsides and what is now the main thoroughfare known as San Pablo, was an unpaved highway for cows, as farmers and ranchers would drive large herds down it to the slaughter houses on Central Avenue. The quaint strip mall on Fairmount Avenue was once upon a time a corral and ranchers drove their cattle there to be shipped by rail.
The town was sleepy hollow, until the 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco brought refugees there who helped the town grow to 1500 by 1917. When the town incorporated at that time, first on the agenda was to tax the saloons, there were nearly twenty, to pay for municipal staff, such as a clerk, marshal, and treasurer.
The saloons (mostly along San Pablo avenue) are long gone and the town has slowly grown to about 24,000. Located in Contra Costa County, California, El Cerrito sits across from San Francisco on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. Its gentle hills boast serene views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Tiburon, Sausalito, and the Marin Headlands. Currently there are over 10,462 housing units in the city proper. Parks in the city include sports and recreation parks and natural areas, such as the 80-acre Hillside Natural Area open space.
