On the northern side of the Golden Gate Bridge, nestled on the eastern side of the Marin Headlands, lies the coastal hamlet known as Sausalito. The 7,000+ residents (and visitors to the town) have much to enjoy, from walking across the landmark Golden Gate Bridge, to taking a ferry across the San Francisco Bay, to strolling along the town's quaint main street, lined with antique and gift shops, replete with fine restaurants offering stellar views of the San Francisco Bay. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Among its many charms, the city is known for having a thing for houseboats. Like Richmond, CA across the bay, Sausalito had a period of shipbuilding activity, during WWII. After the war, and the de-commissioning of the Marin shipyards, abandoned boats and material were recycled into houseboats, and the Sausalito Houseboat Community was launched. Though some intense skirmishes occurred between the "hill people" and members of the houseboat community, resulting in the relocation of most of the original house boats, during the 60s and 70s, 400 remain. The city boasts some well-known residents (past and present), not a few of which lived on houseboats, like Bill Cosby and his wife. The song "Dock of the Bay" was even written by Otis Redding while living on a houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito in 1967.
City residents and businesses must use weekly garbage service, which is provided by Bay Cities Refuse Service. The city's systems are designed to be as user-friendly as possible and include disposal of recycling and compost collection. Questions, comments, and suggestions about the services are welcome at the Sausalito Sustainability Commission (Email email@example.com to send your message to the Wizard of Waste and if appropriate, to the Sausalito Sustainability Commission).
