CITY OF HERCULES

The town of Hercules is located in Contra Costa County, California, along the southern coast of the San Pablo Bay. The city has a population of 26,016 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. The city can trace its origins back to 1881, when California Powder Works moved from San Francisco to the area now known as Hercules. The city’s name comes from that company’s main product. During WWI and WWII, California Powder Works significantly contributed to the production of explosives. Eventually the company closed in 1976, due to foreign competition, and the town became more residential.

In response to a burgeoning residential presence, Hercules became one of the first cities in the U.S. to develop a comprehensive Noise Element of the General Plan, which included contour maps of all major arterial roads and highways, and a city-wide mitigation plan.
