Our Junk hauling truck in Dublin
The town of Dublin, located deep in the eastern part of Alameda County, California, was founded in 1850 by Irish settlers. Oakland, California, is the closest major city (25 minutes away).
The City of Dublin is bursting at the seams, having become the second-fastest growing city in California (the town’s population nearly doubled in the last ten years alone). The population was 46,063 as of the 2010 Census and it is expected to nearly double by 2030. The most recent estimate put the number of housing units at 15,782, of which 63.2% were owner-occupied, and 36.8% were occupied by renters. In anticipation of future growth, the city has been undergoing tremendous development, commercially and residentially. Housing is expected to be able to support 75,000 residents, once existing and planned housing and commercial projects are complete.
Dublin is also keen to preserve its heritage and several historical landmarks are preserved, such as:
- The Murray Schoolhouse (est. 1856)
- Green’s Store (est. 1860)
- The old cemetery (formally est. in 1859)
- Old St. Raymond’s Church (est. 1859), listed n the National Register of Historic Places
The city is the site of over 50 episodes of MythBusters, and in one especially memorable episode a cannonball accidentally misfired, fortunately no one was hurt, though two houses and a minivan were damaged. Though the city is very much a suburb, that incident (temporarily) put Dublin on the map with news coverage from around the world. (Source: Wired Magazine
The city takes waste management seriously and considers recycling of the utmost importance. Through composting, recycling and reuse individuals can reduce the waste stream by up to 75%, according to the city’s website. What are some of the benefits of recycling? Just one ton of glass, if recycled, saves 10 gallons of oil. For each ton of paper we recycle, 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water are saved. Recycling creates jobs – in fact, twice as many jobs are created for every 1,000 tons recycled as they are for the equivalent sent to landfill.
For these reasons and a host of others, Dublin residents are encouraged to do their part to divert unwanted stuffs from landfill.
